Google's new e-mail service, Gmail, is still in the beta testing phase and not yet available to the public. Internet saavy users are quickly deciding that Gmail will be the next big thing, the result being a scramble to get the username they most want for themselves, or to sell to someone else.
Currently there are three types of Gmail accounts according to public knowledge:
Tier I - Accounts owned by Google employees and VIPs. These accounts have 50 invitations that can be sent out by the user.
Tier II- Accounts registered from a Blogger.com invitation, Google employee invitation, or other Google web service invitation. These accounts at some point usually get an option of sending out 2 invites.
Tier III - Accounts registered from a Tier II invitation. There are no known cases of Tier III accounts being given the option of sending out invites.
Many Tier II Gmail users are deciding to make a profit off of their invitations by selling them on eBay. I've been watching eBay auctions and thus far the lowest final price has been $31, and the highest $86. After averaging the final prices of 9 auctions, it looks like users can make an average of $43.49 per invite by selling them on eBay.
More information to come as I get more data:
-Updated average invite cost.
-Price of already-created 'most-wanted' usernames.
-Trends in how the starting price affects the final price.
